Undefeated rivals to decide favouritism
Australia finished day one of the International Wheelchair Rugby Four Nations Tournament with two comfortable victories, setting itself up as the team to beat when day two kicks off tomorrow at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
However, the Australians are sure to face their toughest test as they take on the world number three, Canada, tomorrow morning at 10am. Both teams remain undefeated after the first day.
Australian Head Coach Brad Dubberley names Canada as Australia’s biggest threat to winning gold in Sunday’s final, making it vital Australia secures a win against them early on in the tournament.
“Our guys will have to step up their game tomorrow if we want to beat the Canadians,” said Dubberley.
“We’ve got a quality team who have played brilliantly today so now we just have to keep the momentum rolling into a win against the Canadians and a second against the Brits in the afternoon.”
Leading Australian point scorer Ryley Batt helped the Australians claim victory in today’s games, racking up 22 points to squash Great Britain 47-38 in the tournament opener and a further 31 points to defeat trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand 52-40.
Veteran Steve Porter (16 goals), Cameron Carr (6+? goals) and newcomer Andrew Harrison (12 goals) also finished the day with impressive individual totals, giving the team plenty of confidence heading into tomorrow’s competition.
Australia is set to take on Canada at 10am tomorrow at the Sports Centre at Sydney Olympic Park followed by the second clash with old rivals Great Britain at 4pm. The tournament is staged by the Australian Paralympic Committee.
