Jessica Gallagher has conquered the mountains as a Paralympic alpine skier, and now the 24-year-old is hoping to do the same on the athletics field, as her focus shifts towards gaining selection in the Australian Paralympic team for the London Games in 2012.

At the Vancouver Paralympics in March this year, Gallagher carved her way into Australian Paralympic folklore when she became the first Australian female Paralympic athlete to win a medal at a Winter Paralympics.

The Australian Paralympic Committee has now shifted the focus of its Winter Paralympic program towards Sochi in 2014, following an outstanding campaign at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

The 2010 Australian team sent by the APC to the Games was the largest to contest a Winter Paralympics in Australia’s history, and it returned home triumphantly with one silver and three bronze medals.

Australia’s Gavin Thorneycroft, Terry Cooper and Barry Fear put in convincing performances overnight to move into the finals of the 2010 Boccia World Championships.

Australian Boccia Head Coach John Kavanagh says day two of the 2010 Boccia World Championships belongs to Australia.

With over 50 competitors in each class, Australia won six of its 10 games in the singles competition, with Gavin Thorneycroft so far remaining undefeated.

Thorneycroft, from Somerville in Victoria, did not concede a single point in both his games against Danish Susanne Kamper Larsen, 8-0 and South African Chris Engels, 9-0.

Australia’s Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team, the Gliders, will host wheelchair basketball powerhouse Germany in a ‘Gliders World Challenge’ in June as they prepare for the world titles in July.

The Gliders will play three games at Dandenong Basketball Stadium from June 7-9 before tying in with the Opals World Challenge for two blockbuster double-headers in Geelong on June 10 and back in Dandenong on June 11.

Australia is in a tough position after a mixed start to the team’s event over night at the 2010 Boccia World Championships in Lisbon.

Suffering a 10-2 loss to Norway in the opening match of the team event, Australians Lachlan Kavanagh,  Fiona Lyons, Belinda Harris and Barry Fear fought back to dominate the USA in game two, comfortably winning 11-1.

Grant Bailey (NSW) and Kathryn Ross (VIC) celebrated their international rowing debut as a crew by claiming the silver medal last weekend at World Cup 1 in Bled, Slovenia.

Bailey and Ross, competing in the Trunk and Arms Double Scull, showed their continued improvement as they crossed the line behind the 2009 World Champion Ukraine crew.

Australians have shone at the recent ISSF World Cup, by winning a total of five medals and rewriting the Australian record books in the process.

Staged in France, the event was the third World Cup in which the Australian team has competed this year, following on from successful campaigns in Turkey and Germany.

Paralympians Libby Kosmala and Jason Maroney both put on outstanding performances to lead the Australian charge, securing the three individual medals between them.

It was a double celebration overnight in Manchester as the Rollers and Gliders won bronze at the Paralympic World Cup.

The Rollers overcame a preliminary round loss to defeat European Champion Italy in emphatic fashion, 65-32.
