Australian powerhouse Ryley Batt is widely regarded as the most fearsome wheelchair rugby player in the world. And as his team maintained its unbeaten start to the International Four Nations clash in Sydney this afternoon, Batt showed exactly why he has earned such a reputation.

Australia has opened its International Wheelchair Rugby Four Nations campaign in stunning style this morning, with a 47-38 win over Great Britain in the tournament opener at Sydney Olympic Park.

Ranked number two in the world, the Australians were given a torrid test early in the contest when Great Britain raced to an early lead, and remained within one goal of the lead at quarter time.

Australian wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley has finished fifth in the London Marathon.

A slow start following a surprise rain downpour on the start line left Fearnley with too much to do, and despite passing a number of athletes in the closing stages he finished well behind surprise winner Josh Cassidy of Canada.

Australian Wheelchair Rugby Head Coach Brad Dubberly has declared this week’s International Four Nations Tournament in Sydney a must-win, as his side steps up preparations for the World Championships later this year.

Staged by the Australian Paralympic Committee, the Four Nations tournament will be held at Sydney Olympic Park from April 28-May 2, and will play a critical role in determining the make-up of Australia’s 2010 World Championship squad.

The Australian Paralympic Winter Team returned to Australia from the Vancouver Games this morning (Wednesday) and was welcomed back at Sydney Airport by family, friends and Therese Rein, who is a member of the Honorary Board of the International Paralympic Committee.

The team of eleven athletes doubled Australia’s medal haul from the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, with four medals, and achieved seven top five and fifteen top ten placings, all by its Alpine Skiing athletes.

The Australian Paralympic Committee is rejoicing after a successful Vancouver winter Paralympics but is counting on further corporate and government support.
