Andrew Harrison - Wheelchair Rugby
Quick Facts
Bio
It’s been a while between drinks for wheelchair rugby rising star Andrew Harrison, who hasn’t played an international match for Australia since 2007. After narrowly missing out on the Beijing squad, Andrew is keen to get as much international playing experience as possible before the World Championships later this year and ultimately the London Paralympics in 2012.
Andrew first played wheelchair rugby in 2005, shortly after the diving accident which resulted in his quadriplegia. Whilst recovering in rehab after the accident, he saw fellow Australian team member Bryce Alman give a talk on the virtues of playing wheelchair rugby for Australia and decided to give it a go. Andrew instantly loved it and hasn’t looked back since.
He made the Victorian state side in 2006, where he was named Rookie of the Year and one year later was selected by head coach Brad Dubberley for the Australian side. Andrew enjoys the physical and competitive nature of the game and is honoured to represent both his state and his country. He also loves the team mateship and is working hard to make sure he is part of the squad in the lead up to and during the London Games, where he hopes to secure a gold medal.
Outside sport, Andrew is involved with an education program in schools across the country about spinal cord injuries. He also loves his motor sports and being a firm Holden man, looks up to Mark Skaife, admiring his achievements and what he has done for the sport.
